Dream 2014/12/4

I have a pretty good inkling on where my subconscious drew inspiration for those strange weapon names. Firstly, I believe the spark came from a repeated phrase in "A Song of Ice and Fire":
All the best swords have names.
Going further back, the best swords from "The Lord of the Rings" also had names, e.g. Glamdring, Orcrist, Sting. Finally, let's not forget just how badass names can be in the Halo universe.

Prequel Dream to Dream 2014/12/4

So first, the prequel dream. No date on it because I can't remember when I had it. I am amazed I didn't write it down and/or post it the day after. And now I'm paying for that mistake. I have forgotten some major details by now, I tell you. Actually the forgetting was a bit useful in a way because that's what made me think about it again, which in turn prompted me to have a related dream that night and to make this post now. Silver linings, I 'spose?

Battlestation Components (5)

Got the SSD. Black Friday 2014 was NOT, I repeat, was NOT DiGiorno because it delivered. Sandisk Ultra II 240GB for $75. That's ~31¢/GB. Noice! Apologies for delaying the report on this, it's been a week since this all went down. Of course, I used Amazon Prime so I've also had the package for a few days now, too. With this, I have all the components ready.

Battlestation Components (3)

The last components to show you for now. Still waiting on a good SSD sale. I'm not one of those iProduct buy-a-new-one-every-three-months kind of guys. I plan to pilot this battlestation for a while so I'm going to get exactly what I want to put in it. No substitutes.

Battlestation Components (2)

You remember this guy, huh?
Speaking of things that could only store one game, does anyone remember those demo discs that came with issues of PC Gamer magazine? You know, those CDs that had game demos on 'em? The first discs I have (I'll post a pic if I can find where I put the stash) contain at least 10 demos on them. That's 10 different games you can sample! Then over the years you can see the number of games per disc shrink as the game files get bigger. You can only fit so much data on a damn CD, eh? The latest one I have has only 4 games on it, 5 tops, if I recall. I'm pretty sure they simply stopped issuing demo discs before they ended up with only one game to try out. These days I'm pretty sure you can just download any game demos you wish from their website. But then, do people still play demos even? I sure don't. I just read the reviews from other people who play the game and decide if I'm going to buy the full thing based on the consensus.

Battlestation Construction Project 2014

My dad built all the computers in our house from scratch. It's a side-hobby of his. He'll see a good sale on a part and he'll pick it up and upgrade our designated King Computer. The old part got stowed away. This process repeats itself with different components until he has enough parts set aside to build an entire new(old) computer. The spawning action happens at irregular intervals but over the years the computers have accumulated. As a result there are many, many PC towers just sitting around the house but only three are in use. If you were to look over all of them and examine their components you'd find an amateur history of PC technology as you went around the house. There's a perceptible gradient of obsolescence on display. The King Computer has the best stuff and everything else trickles down. The latest upgrade it received was a second monitor for a dual-screen set-up. Meanwhile I have the #2 computer, the chamberlain in this scenario. It's been a stalwart fellow, this one. It runs all games well on at least Medium settings and it isn't obstructively noisy under load. That's been enough for a long time, but not anymore.

Milestone

So it's been about three years since my university days... Let's ruminate on that for a moment. (╯ヮ╰)
If I were inclined to be trite I could throw in some platitudes right now, e.g. "Seems like only yesterday", "Man, time flies", "Feels like so long ago", etc. And those don't all express the same sentiments either. Viewed to scale, three years of lifetime isn't long at all. Then again, 3 years is 12% of the total lifetime I've lived so far.

Our prayers have been answered!

April 15 release date for the Let It Go collection on Amazon MP3.

Sure I've already downloaded most of the versions but I am more than willing to pay for quality goods. I may be a pirate but I'm no thief.

Speaking of choosing to pay for digital goods, these guys also deserve your money.

Here and here.

This Is What I've Been Waiting For. Finally!

Well, it's the end of March and therefore all versions of Frozen [2013] will have been released in all their respective countries. More importantly they'll have been released in all 43 languages, which, in turn, means I should finally be able to find high quality versions of "Let It Go" in 42 languages. If you'll recall, the French Canadian release reused the mainland French-sung songs.

Even More Disgusting Than Disqus

Nothing good in theaters at the moment. (= =___) That I haven't already seen I mean. My coworker is looking forward to "22 Jump Street" though, release date mid-June. He still has a while to go. I really want a good horror movie at some point but it seems like the only projects getting funded are Paranormal Activity sequels.

These Guys. These... PianoGuys

Today I had the urge to listen to some classic music. Not classical music, per se, just classic music, music I'll never forget.

Goddammit! (。><)9"

Shit, there was an AMA thread on Reddit yesterday and I missed it!!!!! Fucking hell, it would have been the perfect opportunity to spread the idea that they should release an international album for "Let It Go". And I wasn't there. \(T.T)/ 么!!

Disney Movies - Frozen [2013]

Finally went and saw it. I went on a Wednesday afternoon to avoid families and was rewarded for my good planning: completely empty theater. I got the best seat in the house (dead center row & column) and settled in to finally enjoy the vehicle for my current favorite song.

The New Jeopardy Contestant

When I really think about the game show Jeopardy, I'm surprised a show that is so nerdy and 'intellectual' has had such longevity in American television. With mindless shit like Deal or No Deal I'm glad Jeopardy lives strong. May it last forever. Unlike Trebek's mustache.

Disney Movies - Saludos Amigos [1942]

The next six movies in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series are collections of more than one short film each. Disney wouldn't go back to big feature films until safely after the end of WWII with the release of Cinderella [1950]. None of the movies since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had done very well financially because of the ongoing war in Europe. (War on home soil tends to put a damper on movie-going.) I've never heard of any of these except this one and the next one, The Three Caballeros [1944], because they were mentioned in my high school history class. In the early 1940s, the U.S. government was worried about the spread of fascism from eastern Europe into Latin America. To promote goodwill between between the U.S. and its neighbors, the State Department appointed Walt Disney as an ambassador to travel south with an entourage of his studio peeps to make a film about South American culture. Ain't history cool?

Disney Movies - Bambi [1942]

Ohohohohoho, yes, that's right. I NEVER WATCHED BAMBI. Not in English, not in Canto, not in any language. I just went through childhood and missed it. I think I was sick the day everyone watched it in grade school.

Saturday, February 1, 2014

Disney Movies - Dumbo [1941]

I don't want to start off negative but the first thing I noticed was a definite drop in production value compared to the previous three films. I'd say the art and animation quality of Dumbo is closer to a run-of-the-mill TV episode than a feature film.

Disney Movies - Fantasia [1940]

Not really one of the well-known Disney classics. Even if you were to mention "Fantasia" to someone they'd probably think of Fantasia 2000 [1999] instead.

Disney Movies - Pinocchio [1940]

Actually, that soundtrack tape I thought I had for Snow White? I think it was actually some kind of Disney Song Collection instead because now I remember listening to "When You Wish Upon a Star" on that tape along with songs from the other Disney movies.

Disney Movies - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs [1937]

So that whole Frozen [2013] thing has started a Disney/Pixar movie watching spree. I hadn't known that Pixar has only released 14 feature films to date. (o_ô ) What a time for me to have gone through childhood, I've seen most of them! On the other hand, Disney Animation has released 53 so far and I actually haven't seen a good many of them. Would it surprise you to know I've never seen such classics as Bambi [1942], Dumbo [1941], or Peter Pan [1953]? And I've only ever seen The Little Mermaid [1989] and Cinderella [1950] in Cantonese! On a VHS tape, no less. I have never heard those classic songs in English.

Still Listening to That Song

So that list from yesterday's post only included songs I could find in good quality. Here's a list I created of languages I did not acquire the song in. Usually, it's because the video under scrutiny was of poor quality because the movie hasn't come out on DVD in that particular language's country.

Current Favorite Song(s) - 'Let It Go' from Frozen [2013]

I can't believe the last post I made was all the way back in May of last year. Good lawdy! All the same, let's not waste time with the 's and such. (^_^;;;)7
