FYI: North Carolina

Being a guy who's generally apathetic about politics (yes, it's true) I didn't even hear about this until the same time I heard about Obama's declaration.

N. Carolina's state legislature voted to amend their state constitution, banning gay marriage. Here's are some layouts of the precinct voting totals.

So, what do the precincts that stood against bigotry have in common?

Yep, that's right. Those are all places where institutions of higher learning are located. Fancy that correlation!

And I'm sure all the rednecks are thinking, "Daggum liberal yuppies. All dat fancy learnin's twisted dey heads with all kinds'a foolish, high-falootin' nonsense like logic and science til' they don't know what's what."

"All these years, momma was right. School is the devil!"

  1. I love any and all Sandler references. Especially from that. School really IS the devil. Just like alligators are truly ornery because they got all them teeth and no tooth brush. As much as I'd like to agree with this, I still hold some hope for the ignorant masses. God only knows why. Still there probably are parts of America where a decent and enlightening education are considered devil worship. Wouldn't really surprise me.

  2. That graphic is telling, but maybe a little bit misleading, there are still plenty of closed minded higher educated people, and there are many other places in NC where significant colleges are located that still voted yes (ECU, WCU, Wake Forest)...

    1. I noticed Wake Forest was missing, too. There are a number of factors that can account for the wayward precincts, though. First and foremost, voter turnout is only ~35%. Those precincts could have been overwhelmed by driven bigots. Those precincts' college voters may have neglected to actually vote.
